Winter Activities in Innherred

Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and dog sledding are popular winter activities in Innherred.

Cross-country skiing

Steinkjer boasts one of the country's best facilities for skiing. In Byafjellet, closest to the city center, you can ski to the ski lodge. Just make sure you check the opening times at the tourist information first.

Henningvola in the Steinkjer area is very popular for skiing enthusiasts. Overnight accommodation is available at Mokk Farm, where you will also find terrain suitable for cross-country skiing, with groomed trails leading into the mountains towards the Mokkavatnet and Andorvatnet lakes.

Skiing to Norway's Geographical Midpoint is also recommended, where there is access to some great skiing areas and views of white mountain plains as far as the eye can see. From there, you can also take a day trip to Skjækerhatten, which with its 3,736 feet above sea level is Snåsa municipality's highest peak.

The Frol Mountain in Levanger is is a great place for recreational skiing, and Skallstuggu is a widely used starting point for skiing that suits the whole family.

In Verdal, there is plenty of skiing terrain in Målsådalen and Leksdalen and there are also many opportunities for skiing towards the Swedish border and Levanger in the east.

There are skiing trails several places in Inderøy, such as the Petter Northug Skistadion - named after one of Norway's best skiers - as well as evening lit ski trails in Røra, and a roundtrip around Marsteinsvola. All of these are very popular among locals and visitors alike.

Biathlon and ski jumping

There are facilities for biathlon and ski jumping in Steinkjer, as well as in Sprova along the Rv17 road.

Downhill skiing

There are facilities for downhill skiing at Torsbustaden in Levanger and Prestlia in Straumen, Inderøy.

Ice fishing

Ice fishing is a fun activity in winter, whether you go alone or with family and friends, and Innherred has many great lakes to fish in.

Both Steinkjer Kommuneskoger-Ogndalsbruket KF and Snåsa Fjellstyre have cabins for rent at the gates of Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park and Norway's geographical midpoint. The cabins have great locations with access to lakes and hiking areas just outside. There are trout and char of very good quality in the lakes.

Located on the shore of Snåsavatnet and Leksdalsvatnet lakes, Føllingstua Campingis also nearby. Here you can stay in a cabin, while you spend your days on the ice while trying to catch trout and char on the hook. Snåsavatnet is known for its large population of trout.

Should you wish to try your luck at Mokkavatnet lake in Ogndalen, Steinkjer, then Mokk Farm is a great place to stay. Other good places to try your fishing luck are the Leksdalvannet lake in Verdal, and Movatnet lake in Levanger.

Snowshoeing

Join a guided snowshoeing trek in ideal terrain near Mokk Farm. Snowshoes are easy to use and the sense of being close to nature is even stronger than with skiing. This activity is possible during the day, or in the evening if you bring a headlamp. This will be an adventure out of the ordinary, and if you'd like to take some extra time, you can also stay or eat dinner at Mokk Farm.

Dog sledding

Join Sporbryter and their fit and content huskies on a dog sledding adventure in forest and mountain terrain. Their tour prices are all-inclusive, and they offer everything from day trips to eight-day trips in and around Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. They do their utmost to provide you with a varied nature-based experience. You can also join them for an event in a lavvu - a traditional Sami herdsmen's tent.
