The best place for fishing along Kystriksveien is Saltstraumen. Hiking and biking are other popular activities.

Scheduled trips and activities

The Kystriksveien event calendar shows scheduled events along the Nordland coast in the summer season.

Cycling

Kystriksveien is excellent for biking. You can cycle the entire route from Steinkjer to Bodø in 7-12 days, but there are plenty of opportunities for shorter trips and day trips as well.

The combination of express ferries and car ferries allows for island hopping. Feel free to contact Kystrikveien's tourist information offices if you want help to plan your trip. Bike rental is available at the tourist information offices in Steinkjer, Namsos, Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen and Bodø.

Hiking

Kystriksveien features many spectacular hikes. Visit the Torghatten Mountain, with the famous hole that you can walk through. Outside Sandnessjøen you can hike in the Seven Sisters mountain range.

Norway’s second largest glacier is located in Meløy. You can get all the way up to the glacier by taking the boat across Holandsfjord from the tourist office. At this part of the glacier, called Engenbreen, you can try glacier walking.

In Steinkjer you can follow the 10-kilometre-long trail to the geographical mid-point of Norway, close to Skjækra National Park.

Boat trips to the islands

A trip along the Kystriksveien route is not complete without at least one excursion at sea. There are numerous possibilities, both for visitors who want to venture out on their own and for those who prefer to join an organised tour.

Guided activities

At Tømmervika Adventure Center in Alstahaug you can rent a kayak or join a guided tour, while Seløy Kystferie in Herøy takes you out to sea in a RIB boat. Rocks and Rivers offers glacier climbing at Svartisen, guided hikes and kayak trips.

Fishing

One of the most popular activities in the region is fishing. At most campsites you can rent a small boat. There are also plenty of fishing opportunities inland. The best fishing spot is of course Saltstraumen, the world's strongest maelstrom.

In the southern part of Kystriksveien you will find the Namsen River, which is known for particularly large salmon. Overhalla Hotel and Bjøra camping sell fishing licences. Also check out the salmon river in Namdalseid.

Anyone in a boat or by the sea must show caution. Even if the weather is fine in the morning, it does not mean that it will stay that way all day. Check the weather forecast or ask a local before you leave. If the sky darkens and clouds start to gather, it is time to head back. It is a good idea to tell someone where you are going. Remember lifejackets too.
