Tour suggestions in Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad has more to offer than a stroll on the ramparts. Enjoy a picnic and a walk along Glommastien or go island hopping in Hvaler.

Glommastien (The Glomma Trail)

Designated cycle trail along both banks of the Glomma River, going through areas which remind you that sawmills and brickworks were a big part of the area's industrial heritage.

In Fredrikstad the Glomma can be crossed by ferry between the Old Town and Cicignon on the west bank. In Sarpsborg the river is crossed at two points, either by the Sandesund Bridge or over the Sarpsborg Waterfall at Hafslund.

The 30-kilometer long Glomma Trail goes through several places of interest, including Roald Amundsen's birthplace, where you can take a break and learn more about the great explorer's adventures.

The Fredrikstad Woods

The Fredrikstad Woods are criss-crossed by a network of trails that carry you along the banks of the lakes or across small hills where old pine trees have been bent by wind and weather. The Ski Lodge serves refreshments on Sundays. There are open trails suitable for prams and wheelchairs around the chain of three lakes.

The Gressvik Woods

The Gressvik Woods are another nature reserve with superb hiking and cycle trails up the Sprinkelet Hill, 114 meters above sea level, crowned by an observation tower that affords you panoramic views of the whole of Fredrikstad and the nearby Oslofjord.

The island of Kråkerøy

Kråkerøy, locally known as the Flower Island, can offer a great day's cycling. Beautiful trails cross the woods on the way out to the sea. You can visit Hvaler Church, one of the oldest in the country, and probably built as early as 1000 AD. Or take a dip in the sea at Tangen Kro, then enjoy a refreshing meal on the restaurant veranda overlooking the Oslofjord. From here you can head back towards town or explore the Hvaler islands.

Onsøy

Onsøy is an area of varied and beautiful countryside, where a cycle trip brings you to the popular bathing spots of Mærrapanna, Foten and Dypeklo. Bring a fishing rod with you, there are many good places to cast your line from the rocks into the sea. The road brings you out to the island of Hankø - a sailor's paradise. In the bay you can see the monument to King Olav, formed like a sail, and illuminated at night.

The island of Hankø

Hankø is a popular beauty spot with its nature trails, beaches, tennis, crazy golf and so on. Refreshments are served at the Hankø Fjordhotel and Seilerkroa. The island has its own herd of roe deer.

If you continue on the coastal road from Hankø as it turns inland again, it will bring you to the Elingaard Manor, and from there on to the Engelsviken Restaurant, which boasts the best fish broth in the world. From here there is an express ferry to Tønsberg.

Island hopping around Hvaler's outer islands

The trip starts from Skjærhallen in Hvaler. Take the ferry out to the islands and skerries. Get off and explore Søndre and Nordre Sandøy, Herføl and other islands. For ferry times, please call Hollungen on +47 90 85 71 21.

The Hvaler Islands

The Hvaler Islands are criss-crossed by a network of cycle and tour trails. The main Hvaler road is very busy so parts of the journey are best covered by car or bus. But the smaller roads are ideal for the cyclist or hiker. Cyclists and pedestrians are not permitted in the Hvaler Tunnel.

The Quayside Promenade in Fredrikstad

If you want a shorter trip you can cycle into the city center and stroll along the Quayside Promenade, a pleasant urban experience. There is a small ferry that connects the city center and the Old Town.

Stones with stories

Is it possible to travel back in time 3000 years? The Bronze Age is mysterious, dramatic and astonishing. The more today´s experts uncover, the more fascinating this period of our history seems to be.

The countryside around Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg and Hvaler is peppered with
mystic stone circles, majestic burial mounds and images chiselled in stone –
a cultural heritage which talks directly to us from 3000 years ago.

Far from everything is understood or decoded, but even with those pieces of
the jigsaw that have been added the last few years a very exciting picture
is emerging.

These stones tell stories of love, religion and ritual, of astronomy and
agriculture, of prosperity and poverty, power struggle and daily toil, and not
least of all – dreams and hopes.

Come and read them yourself! Follow the map with suggested routes and
signposted walks. History is waiting for you. Buy the new guide book "Ships of the Sun – a round trip in Østfold's Bronze Age" at the Tourist Office or museums.
