7 Summer Activities in Hedmark

With summer activities such as hiking, fishing, horseback riding or golf, Hedmark is the ideal spot for some peace and relaxation.
Did you know:

The name Hedmark originates from the old Norse "Heiðmǫrk" (woodland of the heathens), and was the name used for the area between Hamar and Elverum.

Hiking

Hedmark is home to Rondane, Dovrefjell, Femundsmarka, Forolhogna and Gutulia National Parks. Rondane has several peaks over 6560 feet and the terrain is gentle. Wild reindeer have roamed this area for thousands of years, and traces of old hunting grounds and settlements are everywhere.

In terms of hiking, Rondane offers endless opportunities ranging from easy day trips to mountain walks with overnight stays. A vast network of way-marked trails and a wide choice of cabins are available. Furthermore, the area is easily accessible from Gudbrandsdalen, Dovre and route 3.

Bicycling

The Hamar region's vast cultural landscape is among Norway's most beautiful, and a bicycle ride in the area can be combined with overnight stays at manor farms, local food at one of the many farm cafés and numerous cultural experiences along the way.

Some of the area's bicycle routes follow Mjøstråkk - a 155 mile long ride around Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake. Mjøstråkk is signposted as bicycle route 7, and signs are marked with the "Mjøstråkk" symbol. The Mjøstråkk bicycle map is available for purchase at the Hamar region Tourist Office at a price of NOK 100.

Bicycles are available for hire.

Fishing

With its numerous rivers and lakes, Hedmark is a true angler's paradise. In Femund-Engerdal, one single fishing permit provides access to some 900 lakes, tarns and rivers. Some lakes have stocks of trout and Arctic char, whereas others will also feature perch, pike, grayling and freshwater whitefish. The most attractive fishing areas are the Isteren-Galtsjøen lakes, river Femundselva, river Røa in Femundsmarka, the Elgå area, river Sømåa and lake Hognsjøen.

Fishing permits are available for purchase from most service providers, kiosks, petrol stations and shops in the municipality, as well as at the tourist office in Engerdal. It is also possible to buy fishing permits from Fishspot, at inatur.no or via SMS.

Canoeing

Finnskogen is renowned for its enchanting woodland scenery featuring numerous rivers and lakes, and these beautiful surroundings are ideal for canoeing combined with some fishing. Finnskogen Turist & Villmarksenter offers everything from family-friendly trips on the lakes to multi-day adventures along the rivers. Solhaug Canoe & Leisure offers 7-day canoeing as well as weekend and day trips.

Horseback riding

Explore the spectacular mountain scenery on horseback, and get an insight into the natural and cultural history of the local area. Stay the nights at mountain farms, in cabins or in large tents equipped with wood burner, at 3280 feet altitude. Several of Hedmark's equestrian centers offer both short and long tips on horseback, suitable for experienced as well as novice riders. At Rendalen Fjellridning, visitors can enjoy horseback riding in Rendalen's unspoilt and easily accessible mountain terrain. From Kvistli Islandshestesenter, it is possible to explore areas like Dovre and Rondane National Parks.

Boat trips

When the ship's bell rings and Skibladner puts out to sea, you will discover "the art of slow travel". She glides through the calm waters at 12 knots, and leaves you time to enjoy the tranquillity and beautiful surroundings. Skibladner has been carrying passengers across Mjøsa since 1856, and is today the world's oldest paddle steamer still providing this type of service.

On board, the atmosphere is relaxed. Passengers are welcomed by smiling crew members who always have time for a chat. The on-board menu is based on local produce, and most renowned is Skibladner's traditional salmon with fresh strawberries for dessert. For timetables, please visit skibladner.no.

Golf

Hedmark has a number of golf courses, and most offer tranquillity, nature experiences and challenging golf for all - regardless of level of skill. The following three can be recommended - all 18-hole courses:

Kongsvinger Golf Club is considered one of the best and most beautiful woodland courses in the Nordic region. The same can be said for Atlungstad Golf Club where every hole offers a view of lake Mjøsa. If pine barrens and sandy ground are what you are looking for, Sorknes Golf in Østerdalen is worth a visit.
