Winter Activities in Hedmark

Hedmark is renowned for its stable climate, excellent snow conditions and miles and miles of groomed cross-country ski tracks.
Did you know:

The name Hedmark originates from the old Norse "Heiðmǫrk" (woodland of the heathens), and was the name used for the area between Hamar and Elverum.

Dog sledding

Dog sledding is an adventure suitable for all, and you can either control the dog team yourself or hitch a ride with one of the experienced guides. Choose between daytrips or multi-day adventures with overnight stays in cabins or at mountain farms in the Femund region.

In the Hamar region, Ilseng Farm offers dog sledding at the farm, in the forest or in the mountains. Traditional food is served at a mountain farm or in the tipi-like Sámi-tent known as a "lavvo".

Ice fishing

The lakes in Femund Engerdal are ideal for jigging, and the most common catches during winter are trout, arctic char, perch and pike. For the most enthusiastic, the ice-fishing season starts as early as November, but "peak season" is usually from mid-February until the ice melts. With a thermos of hot chocolate and a small open fire, ice fishing is a memory for life whatever your age.

Skiing

Every year, some 200 kilometres of cross-country ski tracks are groomed in and around the Hamar region, and it is possible to ski from Hamar town centre all the way up to Hedmarksvidda. You will then have reached a vast waymarked network of trails, stretching over 1,550 miles to Rondane.

Sjusjøen, 118 miles north of Oslo, is considered one of Europe's best cross-country skiing destinations with over 115 miles of tracks prepared for classic as well as freestyle skiing.

Another excellent starting point for cross-country skiing is Budor, 87 miles from Oslo. Skis and equipment is available for hire at Budor as well as at Sjusjøen.

Trysil was voted Norway's Best Ski Resort at the World Ski Awards 2013. The family-friendly Trysil is Norway's largest ski resort, and offers everything from children's areas to varied skiing in every category.

Snowshoes

In Femund Engerdal, you can enjoy a snowshoe walk through gentle mountain terrain - with or without a guide. Snowshoeing as well as a wide range of other open-air activities in the Femund region is offered by Norway Outdoors.
