What to do in Hemsedal

The Hemsila River offers top opportunities for fly-fishing. Hiking, cycling, horse-riding and golfing are other popular activities in Hemsedal.


Hemsila is one of the best rivers in Northern Europe for fly-fishing for brown trout. There is a joint fishing permit covering four rivers, 18 lakes and a zone for fly-fishing only. Guided fly-fishing and three- or seven-day fly-fishing packages are also available.

Mountain hiking

There are guided walks to Veslehorn every Tuesday and Friday from the beginning of June to the beginning of September (medium graded walk).  

The Top 20 walking program is a great success. The mountain walks are signed and marked and graded from easy (green and blue) to more demanding routes (red and black).

Hemsedal has one nine-hole course and one 18-hole course, both with low green fees. The two courses are very unlike and offer varied challenges. Both courses are usually open from May until the beginning of October.

Horse riding 

Ride in beautiful forest and mountain terrain. One-hour rides, children's rides, riding camp or one-week tours on horseback from hotel to hotel are all available.

In Hemsedal you will find 13 biking routes (200 kilometers) marked and graded from easy green and blue to more advanced red or black trails. There are short day trips on gravel roads to more demanding trips with overnight stays at the many mountain cabins in the area. The terrain is varied, from asphalt, gravel and cart roads to more challenging tracks and paths. You can take cycles up into the mountains on the new eight-seat chair lift.

Visit mountain farms

There are several traditional mountain farms open to the public in Hemsedal. As well as meeting the animals, you can taste or buy local specialties such as butter, sour cream, cheese, flat bread or "kvikaku" (traditional pancakes).

Hemsedal offers varied climbing in scenic surroundings. Several activity companies organise climbing courses and guiding for both beginners and advanced climbers. Try the via ferrata route up to Vesle Røggjin, suitable for anyone over 12 years.
