Visitors' recommendations in Hemsedal

- We drove the Panorama Road from Hemsedal to Ål, which was a beautiful and very scenic tour, says Jon Erik Heeremann from Holland.

Name: Jon Erik Heeremann and wife
Age: 54 and 56
Nationality: The Netherlands

Reason for visit? We have been in Norway once before and liked it very much. The nature here is fantastic and everywhere it’s peaceful and quite. We visited Northern Norway and wanted to see other parts of the country.

Length of stay? Round tour for two weeks in Norway, four days in Hemsedal.

What have you seen? We are staying in a cabin at Veslestølen, which is located at the ski centre up in the mountain. From here we have a beautiful view over Hemsedal.

We love the nature in Norway, it is such a contrast to the Netherlands. Here we can drive for hours without meeting a single car and we can walk in the mountains and all we meet is sheep. Norway has a lot of space and both the silence and the nature give us energy.

So far we have been a lot on sightseeing both with car and by hiking. In Hemsedal we drove the Panorama Road from Hemsedal to Ål which was a beautiful and very scenic tour. We have also seen the gorgeous Rjukandefossen Waterfall and done some hiking in the valley.

Best experience? To be in the nature is our best experience here!

Worst experience? When we went to Northern Norway last year we felt like we were alone all the time. We like the peace, silence and the big space but sometimes it is good to meet other people. This year it is different and we have only had good experiences.

Biggest surprise? The nature here - the mountains, waterfalls and valleys are even better then the pictures say!

Suggestion to other visitors? We would recommend that you travel around Norway so that you get to see both the mountains and the fjords. We also would recommend that you have enough time to enjoy each place.

Reason for visiting? We wanted to do an active holiday and thought that Hemsedal was a good suggestion with a great offer of different activities.

How long are you staying? Eight days in Hemsedal. We are staying in Fanitullen apartments.

What have you seen? The first day we went to the Bear park in Flå where we saw some big brown bears, elk’s and other animals. It was really cool to be so close to wild animals.

In Hemsedal we rented canoes from Norske Opplevelser and had a nice paddling tour at Vannin. We also rented bicycles and have been biking to different places in Hemsedal.

Hemsedal has a very varied and good bicycle product and we especially like that it is so good signed posted. Biking is a good way to both see and bee in the nature at the same time.

The next days we are planning to go some of the mountain tops in the Topp 20 hiking programme. We are also going on a trip to Flåm where we will try the Flåm Railway, and maybe also a fjord cruise.

Best experience? We feel that the best experience is to both be active with different activities and at the same time get energy and relax.  It is no time-stress here and everywhere it is peaceful and beautiful.

Worst experience? To drive from Larvik to Hemsedal in the dark. We were tired after the journey from the Netherlands and then it was a little too long to drive in the dark. We would recommend one accommodation in Larvik and then drive to Hemsedal the next day.

Biggest surprise? The nature is even more spectacular then the pictures show.

Suggestions to other visitors? We would recommend everyone to rent a bike and explore Hemsedal by bike. This is a really good experience!

Interviews took place July 2007.
