Rondane National Tourist Route is a 46-mile-long stretch of road running from Muen and Sollia Church to Folldal in the county of Hedmark. The area is part of Scandinavia’s southernmost wilderness.
The blue mountains of Rondane lie as a backdrop to Rondane National Tourist Route. Rondane National Park was established in 1962 as Norway's first National Park. Here, the characteristic traces of the ice age are clear.
The area has a rich cultural history. The old buildings at Folldal mines, dating from the mid-18th century, show the life and the class distinctions of the former mining community. At Strømbu, Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt met the invisible serpent. Today Strømbu is a rest area of modern architecture and a popular starting point for mountain walks in Rondane.
Viewpoints along the road
Along the route, exciting stopping points have been designed for taking breaks, parking for hikes and taking photographs.
One such place is Sohlbergplassen that offers magnificent views of Lake Atnsjøen and the mountains of Rondane. From here you can see Rondane as the painter Harald Sohlberg portrayed it in "Winter Night in the Mountains".
Another one is Strømbu, the reconstruction of an old lay-by to a full rest area with services, indoor area with a roof terrace, information boards, a small shop and long-term parking. Strømbu is the main starting point for hikes through the Rondane Mountains from the east.
By Atnbrufossem an existing car park have been upgraded and a small rest area near Atnbrufossen River Heritage Museum has been established. A new visitors' center with rest rooms and exhibition rooms has also been built. The museum, comprising installations for floating of timber, a sawmill and a hydropower station, is located at the mouth of Lake Atnsjøen. The museum is run by the association Atnbrufossen Vannbruksmuseum.
National Tourist Route maps
In co-operation with Nordeca, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) have launched a series of new road maps, each covering one of the 18 different National Tourist Routes in Norway.
The maps describe viewpoints along the way, as well as the National Tourist Routes' nature attractions, dining, accommodations and other attractions along the routes. To give the reader a good and visual impression of the routes, several pictures and descriptions have been placed in the maps themselves.
The maps are available in English, German and Norwegian from kartbutikken.no.
