What to do in Grenland

Grenland has several waterparks and an indoor play centre. Take a trip on the Telemark Canal, join a fjord cruise or cycle along the coast.

Family activities

At Skien Fritidspark, Skien's leisure park, you will find a pool complex with a 25 metre pool, four diving pools, a wave pool, a warm-water pool and a therapeutic pool. There are also a whirlpool bath, saunas and cafeteria.

Here you will also find Himalaya Park, one of Norway’s largest outdoor climbing parks, which offers 74 different climbs on six trails among the trees in the forest. The little ones have a special children's trail – Minilaya. For everyone else there are family trails and other trails offering increasing levels of challenge. The highest and most difficult is for the most daring only and offers both physical and mental challenges.

Eventyrfabrikken is Scandinavia's largest indoor jungle-play facility, designed for children from one to 13, with a special area for tiny tots (one to three-year-olds). Two-level trampolines, giant slides and ball cannons combine to offer lots of stimulation and exercise. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Quality Hotel & Resort Skjærgården in Langesund is located at the outermost point of the archipelago, with direct access to a 4,000 square metre indoor and outdoor water park. The water is kept at 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit all year and the pool complex has a swimming pool, whirlpool bath, Turkish bath and solarium.

Skien Gokart offers an unusual high-speed experience, with 700 metres of fun challenges on the track. You will find Skien Gokart by Skien Airport.

Back-to-nature experiences

Fjord tours out to the various islands in the archipelago around Brevik are popular, and allow you to island-hop. In July, MS Dikkon takes visitors on two-hour sightseeing trips around the beautiful archipelago, with coffee and ice cream available on board.

Or why not take the beautiful journey along the Telemark Canal? The tour starts in Skien. Opt for a day trip, or add overnight accommodation along the canal or at Dalen Hotel.

If cycling is your thing, the eastern leg of the North Sea Cycle Route runs along the Grenland coast and on down to Norway's south coast. Bike hire is available at the tourist office in Langesund.

Other

Luksefjell Villmarksleir in Skien offers wilderness experiences with dog-sledding, assault course, canoeing, axe-throwing and archery for groups, school classes and companies. They can also organise fishing and a taste of outdoor life with overnight accommodation in a lavvo, a traditional Sami tent. Fully licensed catering.

Kaasa Putballpark is a combination of football and golf that is played outdoors. The pitch is in Asdal, between Stathelle and Herre in Bamble. Follow the signs for "Kaasa Putballpark" after the exits for Surtebogen and Borealis. Open daily.

Take in a concert. Wrightegaarden lies at the heart of Langesund, a small coastal town in the mouth of the fjord. Concerts are held here from June to August. Norwegian rock band Postgirobygget plays here every July, signalling that summer has arrived in Grenland. Parkbiografen in Skien, a former cinema, and Kafe K in Porsgrunn also host concerts all year round.
