Hiking in Grenland

The Coastal Path in Bamble is popular, as is the hike to Ulvskollen in Skien, but there are many other options if you want to walk in Grenland.

Here are a few suggestions for walks in Grenland:

Walk to Ulvskollen (3 km)

Walk to the top of the popular Ulvskollen. The Brynhildsbu Cabin, which is built of stone and is pleasantly situated down in a low pass, is open year round. The hill offers many fine viewpoints and resting places, and from the top you can see across large parts of Grenland. Parking at Hynivegen or Valebøvegen in Skien, from where you will find signed footpaths to the top. It is approximately three kilometers to Brynhildsbu. Maps may be purchased from the tourist office in Skien.

The Coastal Path in Bamble

If you're going to walk the entire length of the coastal path, start at the library in Stathelle. Then continue under the Brevik Bridge, through old Stathelle up to Stathelle Primary School. From there the path goes through the forest to Eik churchyard then down Røsskleiva/Hydal and out to Fagerheim/the waterpark.

The coastal path then heads along the old ferry landing, into Kongshavn and out towards Furustranda, before rounding Langesundstangen/the fort and heading down to Steinvika. From Steinvika it crosses Badåsen ridge to Langesund Bad and Krogshavn. From Krogshavn it continues to Kjerrvik, Sandvika, Jypleviktangen, Rognstranda and Hydrostranda, before ending at Vinjestranda. A map of the coastal path may be purchased from the tourist office or the municipal office.

Vealøs: two summits on one hike (13 km)

The walk starts from Lensmannseter and continues via Gamlestulen and Ørnstjern to Østre Vealøs. After registering on the eastern summit, continue down to the idyllic area by Gramsebu. Straight after Gramsebu turn right and start the walk up towards Vestre Vealøs. The walk from Gramsebu offers much fine, open pine forest with some small areas of marshy ground.

Hørsfjell (6-8 km)

The hike to Hørsfjell, Bamble's highest mountain, starts near Heistad. It goes through mostly easy terrain with a gentle, regular gradient to the top, which culminate at 288 meters above sea level. It can be a little uneven in places and rather stony on the last stretch up towards Svarttjenn. Be prepared for some wet sections, crossing some small streams, and some wet marshland in places. The trail is partly marked with blue and red markers.

Århus Cultural Path (4.5 km)

The Århus-Venstøp-Fossum-Århus cultural path in Skien passes through an area of the town that is rich in history. The Fossum Ironworks have made their mark on this part of the town for almost 330 years. Attractions along the path include Århus Gård manor house and carp pond, Jernaldergården – the Iron Age farm, Cudrios Venstøp, ancient burial mounds, rock carvings and Henrik Ibsen's childhood home, Ibsen Venstøp.

Skien historical society has produced a booklet about the path, which is available to buy from the tourist office in Skien.
