Where to stay in Grenland

Langøytangen Lighthouse

The decommissioned lighthouse-keeper's house at Langøytangen is located at the south end of the idyllic Langøya Island, just off Langesund. It makes an exciting starting point for walks on Langøya's many footpaths. There is also good fishing from the flat rocks around the island. The house has four rooms of reasonable standard, sleeping a total of 12. You can rent the entire house or just one room. The beds are provided with pillows and duvets but you need to bring your own bedding or sleeping bag. Open all year.

Sportellet lies in peaceful surroundings in the heart of Skien Fritidspark. Sportellet has 65 rooms of different sizes: single rooms, double rooms, family rooms and apartments. Tailored packages are available for those who want to use the facility for tournaments or as a training camp. 

Hotel Vic in Porsgrunn is a traditional hotel in the heart of the town, just a short distance from shopping and tourist attractions. The hotel has 107 rooms providing a good level of comfort. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and guests can enjoy garden views from the restaurant and reception rooms.

At Quality Hotel & Resort Skjærgården in Langesund you can swim outdoors even when there is a frosty mist over Langøytangen Lighthouse – the pool will still be 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit. As a hotel guest you have access to all the facilities in the 4,000-square-metre indoor and outdoor waterpark, with its swimming pool, whirlpool bath, sauna, waterslide and wave ball. The hotel’s 161 rooms include family rooms, wheelchair accessible rooms and dedicated rooms for people with allergies.

Langesund Bad in Langesund enjoys an idyllic location by the lake, just 500 metres from the centre of Langesund. It is an old, traditional hotel in tranquil surroundings, and is also ideal for parties, groups, courses and conferences.

Bed and breakfasts

Lasses Motell in Stathelle is located by the old E18 on the Bamble coast, close to the Brevik Bridge. There are good bus connections from Oslo, the south coast and Grenland.

Grenland Folkehøyskole in Porsgrunn offers reasonably priced accommodation in rural surroundings, approximately four kilometres from the centre, with bed & breakfast available from 31 May to 1 August. Larger groups, summer camps, conferences etc. at full board are welcome in the same period. The school has a total capacity of 120 beds.

Åkerveien Bed and Breakfast in Porsgrunn offers a basement sitting room with sleeping alcove and 2 beds.

Camp sites

Gåsodden Camping in Skien is beautifully located by Norsjø Lake and has a bathing area and child-friendly beach. Three cabins, plus space for caravans and tents. Good fishing (permits on sale), and canoe hire available.

Olavsberget Camping lies in rural surroundings at Nystrand, four kilometres from the centre of Porsgrunn. This is a family camp site for camper vans, caravans and tents. 18 units available for hire, both cabins and apartments. These are well equipped and there is a communal service building with washing machine and tumble drier.

Rognstranda Camping in Langesund is idyllically located at the head of the Rognsfjord with flat rocks and one of Norway’s finest bathing beaches. The area offers excellent opportunities for hiking and fishing, as well as an enclosed area for ball games. Playground and kiosk. There is space for 250 caravans and tents. Five cabins and a wheelchair-accessible room are also available for hire.

Fjellstad Camping og Hyttesenter in Stathelle lies in tranquil rural surroundings four kilometres from the centre of Langesund. The site has 17 cabins for hire. A large grassed area provides plenty of space for caravans and tents. Short walk to bathing beaches.

Other camp sites include Kjønnøya Camping, Brevigstrand Skjærgårds Camping and Strandsletta Camping, all of them in Stathelle.

Private accommodation

At Auen Urtegård in Siljan you can pick herbs in the garden for your cooking and stay in the Gamlestua, dating from 1750, which has three bedrooms, a kitchen and living room. Lillestua is a basic cottage with a fridge and cooking facilities that sleeps two, while Lekestua offers basic accommodation for two people.

Borgestad in Skien offers a two-bedroom apartment for hire. Use of garden/patio and Internet access. 

Støperiet Overnatting in the centre of Skien offers accommodation in a self-contained apartment in a Swiss-style chalet attached to a former iron foundry. The apartment is close to the Lundedalen recreation area and Bakkestranda beach. The flat has two bedrooms. Internet access and convenient parking.
