Winter in Rjukan

The mountains around Rjukan in Southern Norway are perfect for family skiing holidays.

Alpine, cross-country and snowboarding

The Rjukan area has facilities for both traditional skiing and the more modern winter sports. So whether you prefer snowboarding or slalom, Telemark skiing, or perhaps want to go for long cross-country skiing or orienteering trips in the high mountains, you will find something to suit you here.

Gaustablikk Ski Centre

On Gaustatoppen you'll find Gaustablikk Ski Centre with great views towards Gaustatoppen mountain, just 15 minutes drive from the center of Rjukan. Gaustablikk Ski Centre is one of the largest ski resort in Norway, and always one of the first places to open for the season and the last to close.

Take a look at the piste map.

Telemark Super Ski

8 ski centers, 1 pass
Gaustablikk Ski Centre is part of the Telemark Super Ski, where you can run free in all of the eight ski centers in Telemark if you have a valid ticket for one of them.

For the children

Gaustablikk Ski Centre has its own play area for children, where they can learn to ski through play. There is also a forest trail, "Troll trail", and a section for youth where they can edit and watch movies they have taken out on the slopes.

Ski passes

Ski passes for children up to 7 years are free. A key pass is mandatory and must be purchased if you do not have one already.

Check out the latest ski pass prices (In Norwegian only).

Ski hire

You can hire ski equipment at Kvitåvatn Fjellstoge.

Ski school

Gaustablikk Ski Centre offers skiing lessons for alpine, snowboard and cross-country skiing.

Free shuttle service

There is a free shuttle between Rjukan and destination Gaustatoppen several times daily.

Off-piste from Gaustatoppen

Gaustabanen brings you to the top
Gaustabanen is a spectacular and dramatic funicular that goes inside the Gaustatoppen Mountain, and takes you right to the top of the mountain at 1,883 meters above sea level. Bring your skis along and get an awesome off-piste ride down.

Please note that if you take the easiest way to the top, with Gaustabanen and not by foot, there is only one marked trail that can be run on your own without a guide. If you want a greater challenge, one of Gaustatoppen Opplevelser’s guides must join you for the the ride down.

Cross-country skiing

In the Rjukan area there are tremendous opportunities for cross-country skiing. Go skiing along hundreds of kilometers of cross-country tracks, most of them at Gaustablikk, Skinnarbu or in the Skirvedal Valley.

Winter without skis

Ice climbing
In recent years Rjukan has become Northern Europe's number one ice climbing destination. Over 200 icy waterfalls in an especially long and stable winter season provide excellent conditions for climbers. There is an annual Ice Climbing Festival in Rjukan in February.

Snowshoeing
At Kvitåvatn ski hire you can rent snowshoes for your own use or order guided tour to Ørnenipa, Djuptjørn or Gaustatoppen.

Rjukanbadet Swimming Centre
A visit to Rjukanbadet is a wonderful way to relax. This is not just a swimming complex, but a center for well-being and comfort.

Other activities
The Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum and the Hardangervidda National Park Centre are open all year.

Krossobanen is a cable car that takes you up to the foot of Hardangervidda. This is a good starting point if you want to try DNT's network of trails, or you can take the lift just for the experience and the view.

If you drive to the center of Rjukan, take a stop at Rjukan Torg. In clear weather you can see the effect of the sun mirror that made headlines around the world.
