Top winter destinations and activities in Telemark

The county of Telemark in Southern Norway is known as the cradle of skiing, and is the largest ski region in the country.

The magnificent and ever changing scenery in Telemark is made for skiing and will provide enjoyment for the whole family. But winter wonderland Telemark offers a variety of fun and exciting activities in the snow, in addition to skiing.

Telemark SuperSki is a partnership between 8 ski centers in Telemark offering a possibility to visit more than one ski center within the valid time period of the ski pass. So if you have a weekend pass you can spend one day in Rauland and the next day in Gaustablikk etc.

Under 3 hours by car from both Oslo and Bergen, in addition to being Denmark's closest skiing region.

Rjukan and Gaustablikk

Rjukan is situated in the midst of dramatic and magnificent surroundings in the north of Telemark. Only 2,5 hours from Oslo and the 6th largest ski center in Norway is Gaustablikk Ski Center. Providing a backdrop to a family winter holiday is Telemark's highest mountain called Gaustatoppen. Winter activities in Rjukan and Gaustablikk include ice climbing, ski sailing, ice fishing and snowshoeing. Off-piste skiing from Gaustatoppen is popular and special since you can choose to take the Gaustabanen funicular inside the mountain all the way to the top! Many opportunities for cross country skiiing can be found at Rjukan. This is situated on the edge of the Hardangervidda.

Vrådal

Try alpine skiing and snowboarding at Vrådal Panorama Ski Center or cross-country skiing in the mountains and forests surrounding Vrådal. One of Telemark's largest ski centers, with five lifts and 15 slopes is Vrådal Panorama Ski Center. An eight-seat chair lift ensures there are no long lift queues. Other activities include sleigh rides, horse riding in the woods, and snowshoeing excursions.

Rauland and Haukeli

Rauland and Haukeli have some of the best cross-country trail networks in Norway - over 124 miles of groomed tracks await here. The skiing season normally lasts from December to April. Rauland has long been a popular winter destination for the whole family. Rauland is the largest alpine destination in Telemark with three ski resorts Vierli Skisenter, Rauland Skisenter and Raulandsfjell Alpinsenter.  Alternatives to skiing include snow scooter trips, snow rafting, horse riding, kiting, dog sledding and ice fishing, as well as snowboarding. And for those of you just looking to unwind in beautiful surroundings, relax at  mountain spa.

Lifjell

Lifjell is the southernmost mountain plateau in Norway and is located in the heart of Telemark with only a short distance from Denmark and only 2 hours from Oslo. The mountain terrain offers around 20 peaks over 3,608 feet. Lifjell Skisenter has various downhill skiing possibilities (including off-piste skiing). At Lifjell there is also a ski area offering slopes especially for children and beginners for slalom and snowboarding, as well as easy cross-country tracks.

Morgedal

Morgedal is famous for being "the cradle of modern skiing". It was in Morgedal that Sondre Norheim developed skis that could twist and turn, and invented the heel bindings. His old cottage is open for visitors. Norsk Skieventyr /ski museum is also located in Morgedal, and shows the development of skiing through the ages.
