Blaafarveværket

Blaafarveværket comprises a museum, cobalt mines, glassworks and art exhibitions in the municipality of Modum, only one hour by car from Oslo.

The heart of Blaafarveværket, which is one of Norway's most visited attractions, is the glassworks. This is where the annual art exhibitions are held, as well as the permanent exhibition "From Cobalt Ore to Blue Pigment".

The Children’s Farm is also located here, along with the café where you can enjoy traditional Norwegian food, and the Mill which houses a souvenir shop.

In the Wheel House there is an exhibition about the history of Blaafarveværket.

There is a bathing spot and a large park with tables and benches along the bank of the Simoa River, and the Tourist Information Office for Modum, Sigdal and Eggedal is also located at Blaafarveværket.

The cobalt mines

The cobalt mines on the ridge of Skuterudåsen, eight kilometres from the main area of Blaafarveværket, stretch three kilometres from north to south. You can walk along the side of enormous open-cast mines in a remarkable man-made landscape. You can also take a guided tour into the mines and experience the special atmosphere of tunnels and chambers inside the mountain. The small museums in the mining area give you an insight into the lives of the miners.

Art exhibitions

It has always been important to Blaafarveværket to show art and culture in context. The first exhibition of paintings was held in 1978. Since then the exhibitions have become an annual event, and many people come to Blaafarveværket just to see them.

The exhibitions have concentrated on the period 1850 - 1950, with an emphasis on Nordic art by artist such as Adolph Tidemand and Hans Fredrik Gude

In the manor house, Nyfossum, visitors can see on permanent display many beautiful and haunting interiors painted by the celebrated Norwegian living artist Ida Lorentzen. Her focus on light and space, windows and doors, creates a portrait of the inner soul of a house built in the 1820s.
