Hiking in Ål

Paths and mountain trails crisscross the valleys and mountains in all directions in Ål.

Most trails are old hiking and cattle paths and they make it easy to reach the beautiful mountains. Here are some suggestions for nice hikes in Ål.

Around Bergsjø

  • High mountain terrain, mostly flat and easy
  • 1,070 - 1,190 metres above sea level
  • Distance: 8 kilometres
  • Time: 2 - 3 hours

Start the hike at Bergsjøstølen or Bergsjø. Follow the marked path around Lake Bergsjøen. This is a nice walk in easy hiking terrain. You are recommended to take a detour to the viewpoints at Vardehovda (1,190 metres above sea level) and Storeberget (1,129) with excellent view over Vats.

Vealie to Versjøen

  • High mountain terrain
  • 1,000 - 1,200 metres above sea level
  • Distance: Approximately 6 kilometres one way
  • Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes back and forth

The hike starts at Vealie, where the road crosses the river Eitra (tollroad). The path follows the Eitra up until the terrain flattens. Here you continue in easy terrain, and you will now be able to see Kyrkjetjørne on your right hand side, with Lake Versjøen behind. The path now goes further on the left hand side of Versjøen to Venebotn. Good path in open terrain. Great trip with a nice view and possibilities for a swim.

Sundreberget (round trip)

  • Forrest terrain
  • 450 - 700 metres above sea level
  • Distance: 4 kilometres
  • Time: 1 hour and 30 kilometres

Start the trip in Trolldalsvegen behind Torget (in the centre of Ål), or in Øvre-Ålsvegen by the information board. Follow the path up till you reach Sundreberget. Then you continue along the path until it turns back again to Sundreberget and your starting point.

The path up to Sundreberget from Trolldalsvegen is quite steep, and the path from Øvre-Ålsvegen is not so steep. When you have reached the top you will have easier terrain with some increase towards the highest point of the trail. Marked path.

Experiences during the hike: Information boards about geology, flora, fauna, culture and history. Nice view of the centre (Sundre) and Vestlia.

Bergsjøstølen - Eitrejuvet

  • High mountain terrain, quite steep
  • 1,080 - 1,500 metres above sea level
  • Distance: Approximately 16 kilometres
  • Time: 6- 7 hours back and forth

The trip starts by Bergsjøstølen. Follow the DNT- marked trail for about 6 km from Bergsjøstølen to Eitrestølen. this part of the hike is in high mountain terrain with slow increase. From Eitrestølen you will follow a small path along the river Eitra. Inside Eitrejuvet (gorge) on your right handside you will see Eivind the Outlaw's cave. Follow the same trail back to starting point.

Bosset - Dyna - Steinstølen - Fjellheim - Bosset (round trip)

  • High mountain terrain
  • 1,040 - 1,212 metres above sea level
  • Distance: 12 kilometres
  • Time: 4 - 5 hours

The hike starts at Bosset, arrival from Ål station up Vestlivegen (tollroad). From Bosset the hike goes along a good path between the two lakes Restjødnan and then further up to Dyna. You will pass Bispen on your way up to Dyna.

Furtheron the trip goes along a path to Steinstølen. From here you will follow the mountain road to the crossroad by Fjellheim. Follow the path past Fjellheim back to Bosset.

The trip is in easy terrain on paths and mountain roads which are well-marked. Fantastic view to the surrounding areas.
