As much as 400 kilometres of prepared ski trails are ready for you. All trail preparation machines have a GPS, which means you are updated on the status of the trails at all times.

Be inspired by this video from Ål in Hallingdal, and find the real cross-country feeling.

The Bergsjø area is a popular high mountain area for cross-country skiers and a good starting point for snow kiters and ski sailers. Enjoy physical challenges and recreation in this wide and varied landscape.

If the family is split between cross-country and alpine skiing, there are cross-country trails starting by Ål Ski center and Skarslia ski- og akesenter.

Ål Ski centre

In Votndalen, 7 kilometers from the center of Ål, you'll find Ål Ski centre. You'll find a children- and family area, slopes for all difficulties, six lifts, freestyle area, cafeteria, ski rental and ski school.

The family area and the lower part of Svartebergløypa has flood lights and are open for skiing every Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Skarslia ski- og akesenter

In the Bergsjø are you'll find Skarslia ski- og akesenter. Here, there are slopes for tobogganing, well prepared alpine slopes for young and old skiers, and cross-country trails on the high mountain. You'll be pulled to the top on specially built toboggans.

At the top you can choose between two slopes, both of which are among Norway's longest toboggan slopes and well separated from the alpine slopes. You can choose between single toboggans for adults or one child above 10 years old, and double toboggans for adults and children under the age of 10.

Ice fishing

Equipped with an ice drill, a woollen blanket, fishing gear, warm clothing and a hot drink in a thermos flask, you are ready for a tranquil experience on the frozen lake. The ice is normally safe in January, but always seek advice from locals before you go. Vatsfjorden, Rødungen North (in the Bergsjø area) and Rødungen South (in Sangefjell) are among Eastern Norway's best fishing lakes.

Sleigh rides

A ride in a horse-drawn sleigh under the stars makes for an unforgettable experience, particularly when it is followed by a sumptuous meal and a relaxing night in front of the fireplace. The equestrian center Gjeldokk Hestesenter will provide the horses and sleighs. It is possible to order the horse sleigh to start from your hotel or cabin if you so wish.

Dog sledding

If you want to try something new, why not try dog sledding on Rødugen? You will get to try running a sledge yourself, and feel the energy from the dogs as they pull you over white lakes and mountains. This is an activity suitable for the whole family, or for groups or parties who want to try something exciting and out of the ordinary.

Kiting and ski/snowboard cable park

With skis or snowboard, a kite and perhaps a few lessons under your belt, you will be free to find your way across frozen lakes, and up and down mountain sides. With acrobatic jumps and high speed, this is a sport for daredevils. The Bergsjø area is ideal for kiting. Bergsjøstølen is the cradle of kiting and here you will find courses available throughout the winter.

At Bergsjøstølen it is now possible to do skiing activities with skis or board using Norway's only ski/snowboard cable park on ground. The cable park has been made for skiing games for children and adults, that it to say it is just as demanding as you want it to be, and suitable for all ages. Choose whether you want to practice tricks, or just play.

Ice skating

At Lake Bergsjøen, right outside Bergsjøstølen, there is an ice skating rink where you can try your skills. Skate hire is available (sizes 28 to 39), and so is hockey gear. There is also an ice skating rink by Ål High School in the center of Ål in Hallingdal.
