Winter in Ål

Ål is a winter wonderland offering cross-country and downhill skiing, as well as other outdoor activities like dog sledding, sleigh rides or kiting.

Alpine skiing and tobogganing

Situated some seven kilometers from the center of Ål in Hallingdal, Ål Ski Centre has six lifts, and several good slopes from new beginner to expert. The family area and the lower part of the Svarteberg piste are floodlit. Night skiing is available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. There is also a café on site, and ski rental and ski school are available on request.

Located in the Bergsjø area (Bergsjøområdet), 25 kilometers from the center, Skarslia Ski- and Toboggan centre is perfect for families. It offers fantastic sledging hills, well-prepared downhill slopes for adults and children and cross-country tracks up to the mountains.

Sitting in a specially built sledge, you are pulled by lift to the top of the hill. There is a choice of two slopes, 1.2 kilometers and 1.5 kilometers long respectively - these are among Norway's longest toboggan hills. There are double sledges for one child and one adult and single sledges for adults and children over 10 years.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing enthusiasts might very well find their dream in Ål. With 400 kilometers of groomed trails running from 450 to 1,250 meters above sea level, Ål offers fantastic possibilities. Ål has installed GPS systems in all of its track machines, so that you can easily find out when and where the cross-country tracks have been prepared.

Bergsjøområdet is a great high mountain area for cross-country enthusiasts. At Liatoppen you will find a biathlon and cross-country arena. Throughout the winter season many competitions are held here, and they are the first to prepare the tracks when the season starts.

There are floodlit trails for evening skiing at Liatoppen, Ål Ski center, Leveld, Vats and in the center of Ål.

If your family is divided between alpine and cross-country skiing, then both Ål Ski Centre and Skarslia Ski- and Toboggan centre are excellent starting points, as they both have cross-country tracks directly from the ski centers.

Watch the various skiing areas in Ål and find the real cross country feeling by watching this video from Ål in Hallingdal:

Ice fishing

Equipped with an ice drill, a woollen blanket, fishing gear, warm clothing and a hot drink in a thermos flask, you are ready for a tranquil experience on the frozen lake. The ice is normally safe in January, but always seek advice from locals before you go. Vatsfjorden, Rødungen North (in Bergsjøområdet) and Rødungen South (in Sangefjell) are among Eastern Norway's best fishing lakes.

Sleigh rides

A ride in a horse-drawn sleigh under the stars makes for an unforgettable experience, particularly when it is followed by a sumptuous meal and a relaxing night in front of a real fire. The equestrian center Gjeldokk Hestesenter will provide the horses and sleighs. It is possible to order the horse sleigh to start from your hotel or cabin if you so wish.

Dog sledding

If you want to try something new, why not try dog sledding? Perfect for families and groups, this is an experience you will remember for a long time. You will get to try and run a sledge yourself, and feel the energy from the dogs as they pull you over white lakes and mountains.

Kiting and ski/snowboard cable park

With skis or board, a kite and perhaps a few lessons behind you, you will be free to find your way across frozen lakes, and up and down mountain sides. Acrobatic jumps and high speed - this is a sport for daredevils. Bergsjøområdet is ideal for kiting. Bergsjøstølen is the cradle of kiting and here you will find courses available throughout the winter.

At Bergsjøstølen it is now possible to do skiing activities with skis or board using Norway's only ski/snowboard cable park on ground. The cable park has been made for skiing games for children and adults, that it to say it is just as demanding as you want it to be, and suitable for all ages. Choose whether you want to practice tricks, or just play.

Ice skating

At Lake Bergsjøen, right outside Bergsjøstølen, there is an ice skating rink where you can try your skills. Skates hire is available (sizes 28 to 39), and so is hockey gear. There is also an ice skating rink by Ål High School in the center of Ål.
