Hiking enthusiasts have many reasons to explore Geiranger, Ålesund and Nordfjord on their next trip.
The Art Nouveau town of Ålesund is a perfect starting point for hikes along the coast and to the fjords in the region of Sunnmøre. Wherever you go, there are outdoor experiences and cultural history to be found.
The Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and when you take a well-deserved rest on the mountains above the fjord, you will understand why.
Nordfjord is jam packed full of stories and experiences. From the coastal views in the west to the glaciers and lush mountain farms towards the inner arms of the fjords, the Nordfjord countryside should be savoured from many different perspectives.
The hiking season varies from place to place. Along the coast it is usually possible to hike all year; in other places, the season lasts from May to October or from June to September. More information is available in the individual hiking offers.
The hiking trails usually start near your accommodation or in connection to a car park. Many trails are also easily accessible by public transport. Explore the area on your own or join a guided tour. Walks can take a few hours or several days – the choice is yours.
In Ålesund there are easier options in the town itself, along the coast and in the fjord area, and tougher challenges like the summit of Slogen in the Sunnmøre Alps. In Geirangerfjord you can also choose between gentle strolls and demanding summits. You can also hike for days in the Tafjordfjella Mountains, going from cabin to cabin.
South of Ålesund and the Geirangerfjord you will find the glacier landscape of Nordfjord, which includes the spectacular Briksdalsbreen Glacier. This area also offers great hikes, for example the hike to the top of Skåla Mountain, as well as many lovely trails along the coast.
At 5,131 feet above sea level, Slogen in the Sunnmøre Alps is arguably the finest summit in the Sunnmøre Alps, with impressive views of the surrounding peaks and the Hjørundfjord.
Perched high above the Geirangerfjord, the mountain farm of Skageflå in the Geirangerfjord is a popular hiking destination, offering spectacular views of the fjord and the famous Seven Sisters Waterfall on the opposite mountain side.
The highest mountain in Northern Europe with its foot in a fjord, Skåla in Nordfjord reaches 6,062 feet above sea level. It is possible to spend the night in the tower at the top of Skåla, from which you enjoy an extraordinary view.
Several companies offer guided hikes in Ålesund and Geiranger. There are also guided walks in Nordfjord.
