Getting to Kristiansund and Nordmøre and around

The major transportation hub for the region is Kristiansund, which is easily accessible by car, plane and boat.

By boat and ferry

Express boat
Kystekspressen offers a quick and comfortable journey between Kristiansund and Trondheim through beautiful scenery. The trip with the express catamaran takes only 3 hours and 15 minutes. It also stops at the island of Smøla outside Kristiansund.

Hurtigruten (The Norwegian Coastal Voyage)
Explore wildlife and stunning scenery along the Norwegian coast with Hurtigruten. Two of the Hurtigruten boats call at Kristiansund twice a day; on their northbound and southbound voyages.

Ferries
The county of Møre og Romsdal is full of contrasts, with deep fjords and steep montains. Travelling with ferries is a natural part of the journey. Enjoy the fresh air and the lovely view from the deck. Most ferries are operated by Norled.

By bus

The bus connections between Kristiansund and Norway's main towns and cities are good.

By car

From Oslo:
Follow the E6 to Otta, continue to Geiranger, then north on the E39 via Ålesund, Molde and the Atlantic Road.

Another option is to take the E6 to Dombås via Åndalsnes and the Trollstigen Mountain Road or take E39 north via Molde and the Atlantic Road.

If you take the E6 to Oppdal, via fv. 70 to Sunndal and on to Kristiansund, you will experience high mountains, deep valleys and some of the world's tallest waterfalls.

From Bergen:
When driving from Bergen, you have the choice of several exciting roads, including the E39. Many roads involve ferry crossings.

From Trondheim (via Orkanger):
The fv. 680 along the coast of Nordmøre, via Kyrksæterøra and Aure, offers stunning coastal landscape and beautiful skerries.

The E39 via the Vinjefjord and Halsa is a good option if you want to get a taste of the varied scenery of the Nordmøre region.

The fv. 65 via Rindal and Surnadal follows the Trollheimen Mountains and the Surna River, one of Norway's best salmon rivers.

By plane

Kristiansund Airport Kvernberget is situated seven kilometers from the center of Kristiansund. There are several daily direct flight from/to domestic and international destinations, for example:

  • Kristiansund – Oslo
  • Kristiansund – Bergen
  • Kristiansund – Stavanger
  • Ålesund – London
  • Stockholm – Trondheim
  • Copenhagen – Trondheim

By train

When travelling by train, you have several options:

  • Train from Oslo to Oppdal, and bus to Sunndalsøra, Kristiansund
  • Train from Oslo to Trondheim, and bus or Kystekspressen express boat to Kristiansund
  • Train from Oslo to Åndalsnes, and bus to Kristiansund
  • Train from Østersund (Sweden) to Trondheim, and bus or Kystekspressen express boat to Kristiansund
