Plan your trip to the Sognefjord area

Along Norway's longest fjord you can hike in some of the country's most popular mountain areas, get tasteful traditions on a plate, and see the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Nærøyfjord.

The western coast is known for its magnificent fjords. The longest and deepest is the Sognefjord, that stretches from just north of Bergen and all the way into the Jotunheimen mountains. The Nærøyfjord branch is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other picturesque fjord arms are the Lusterfjord, the Fjærlandsfjord, and the Finnafjord. They get their beautiful emerald green colour from meltwater from nearby glaciers.

Along the fjord, you’ll find many charming towns, such as the art village Balestrand, the book town Fjærland, and Lærdal, which has more than 150 well-preserved wooden houses that date back to the 16th and 17th century.

Don’t miss the Borgund stave church or the Flåmsbana railway, which takes you from Flåm by the fjord to the top of the mountains in only an hour.

The mountains that surround the inner part of the fjord are among Norway’s most popular hiking areas. Here, you’ll find the Jotunheimen and Breheimen mountains, the Jostedalsbreen glacier, and the valleys Aurlandsdalen and Utladalen. Go hiking, rafting, climbing or summer skiing, or cycle the famous Rallarvegen.

The area is known for strong food traditions and ingredients of the highest quality, from fruit and berries to game and goat cheese.

Sognefjord has achieved the certification Sustainable Destination. Although this does not mean that the destination is sustainable, it does mean that it has made a commitment to work systematically to reduce the negative effects of tourism, while strengthening its positive ripple effects.
