The Stavanger Region is famous for its culinary diversity. The area is particularly known for shellfish, dairy and meat productsvegetables, especially tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley and potatoes, and fruit. Why not make a stop at Voll Ysteri, a small dairy that produces the Jæren cheese raclette?

The Stavanger Region is home to the Gastronomic Institute of Norway, and also Måltidets Hus, the national centre for food-related professions.

Recommended restaurants

Tango Bar & Kjøkken is a popular restaurant run by Norwegian chef Kjartan Skjelde. It is located on the waterfront area in Stavanger.  

Flor & Fjære is an exotic garden and restaurant on the island of Sør-Hidle, only 20 minutes by boat from Stavanger (two daily departures). Open May - September.

Sjøhuset Skagen is a restaurant in a historic building dating from around 1770, located in the middle of Stavanger centre. The comprehensive menu features both Norwegian and international dishes.

Herlige Restauranter is a popular chain of restaurants in the Stavanger Region offering tempting food, smooth drinks and enjoyable evenings.

Recommended cafés

Ostehuset (literally "the house of cheese") is a popular café in Stavanger which features a varied menu and friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Sjokoladepiken is a chocolate themed café with a wide range of products, sprung from the founder's passion for chocolate. The intimate café is found in the colourful Øvre Holmegate.

Food Story's two cafés have a menu based on seasonal ingredients, with no artificial additives, which changes daily. They provide organic products chosen for their taste, design, and the story behind each ingredient.
