In Voss you can find a variety of places to eat. In addition to the typical grill and steakhouse, pizza and Chinese restaurants, Voss has a number of cafeterias offering a varied menu, including traditional Norwegian dishes. For a more exclusive meal, try one of the hotel restaurants.

If you are looking for local traditional tastes, you should visit Smalahovetunet (pages only in Norwegian). In a farm house dating from the 1700s you will be served traditional style lamb meat ("smalahove" and "pinnakjøt"), sour cream porridge, flat bread, and cured and seasoned meat, amongst other local and Norwegian specialities. Smalahove translates into "sheep head". Please note that pre-booking is necessary (phone: +47 56 51 69 65; email: smalhov@online.no).

Typical food from Voss

Vossafår is a type of sausage which is cut in thin slices and used in sandwiches. It can be purchased in supermarkets throughout Norway.

From early days lamb has been important for Norwegian farmers. Smalahove is the smoked head of a lamb and the dish has long traditions in Voss. In early days smalahove was used for an everyday meal, however, in recent years it has been much used in connection with festive occasions. Every autumn an event called "Smalahovesleppet" takes place in Voss, celebrating the smalahove tradition.

Fenalår is cured and seasoned leg of a lamb. This is a traditional Norwegian type of meat, produced throughout Norway, which can be purchased in supermarkets – ready cut, or as the full leg. If you wish to find the local taste, look for the name "Voss" on the products.
