What to do in Troms

Nature plays an important role in many of the activities which are on offer in Troms.

Hiking

Peaceful hiking in the tranquil countryside or challenging adventures in untouched nature? In the compact county of Troms, the distances between contrasts are short and you can say yes to both. Troms is a hiker’s paradise. You may choose between everything from short day hikes to longer overnight trips.

There are also many nature and cultural heritage trails, which are easily accessible and ideal for visitors of all ages. Other circuits, especially some summit ascents, are best conquered with a qualified mountain guide. With the joys of summit ascents, you can choose one peak in the morning and another in the afternoon or conquer a new one each day.

The following companies can provide you with more information about your mountain adventures:

  • Lyngen Lodge
  • Synatur, Jøkelfjord
  • Villmarkstur
  • Bre og Vandring
  • Lyngsfjord Adventure

Marked hiking trails are located throughout the county, whilst the Northern Cap Path goes from Sweden, through Troms, to Finland. For information about routes and organised hikes, please contact the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT).

Fishing

Deep-sea fishing options are available along the coastline. In most cases, accommodation providers also have boats available. They have also got fishing tackle for hire.

Freshwater fishing includes fishing for salmon, arctic char, sea trout and other freshwater fish species.

Anyone being in a boat or down by the sea must show caution because even if the weather is fine in the morning it does not mean that it will stay that way all day. Check the weather forecast or ask a local before you leave. If the clouds darken and start to gather, it is a good idea to head back. It is smart to tell someone where you are going. Remember lifejackets!

Discover the island of Spildra

Spildra in Kvænangen has a fascinating history with archaeological remains more than 10,000 years old. There is evidence of Viking settlement and the island was of special significance for the Sami. Local companies offer accommodation and various guided tours on land and water.

Take a boat trip on the Reisa River

Elvebåtsenteret offers trips in traditional river boats on the Reisa River to Mollisfossen, a 269 m high waterfall in the Reisa National Park. Longer trips are available by advance booking.

Riding

There are several companies to choose between, each offering tours in different Arctic terrain. You may participate in short tours or week-long excursions.

Canoeing

Troms has gentle rivers and other stretches that are more demanding. There are several companies to choose between, some even offering guided tours.

Festivals

Troms has a countless number of festivals and events. The Riddu Riddu Festival focuses on the Coastal Sami and other indigenous peoples’ traditions and music. The Baski Festival is inspired by Kven traditions, while Kalottspell has roots in the culture of the dalesmen.

Troms for children

See wolves, brown bears, lynx, wolverines, arctic foxes, elks and other animals from the polar fauna at Polar Zoo. Polar Zoo, which is one the world's northernmost zoos, lies in the Salangsdalen Valley in Bardu.

In Bardufoss, Polarbadet (an indoor water park) offers activities for the whole family: Solarium, sauna, steam bath, water slides, swimming pools, jacuzzi, mini golf, hot tub and massage.

Senja Family Park shows how the cultural landscape should be and has family activities that focus on children and animals.

Bluenisseland Amusement Park at Målselv Fjellandsby opens on 15 November 2008.
