Just outside Bodø you will find a global attraction, Saltstraumen. It is here, just north of the Arctic Circle, that we find the world’s strongest maelstrom - an eldorado for divers and anglers with its abundance of cod, pollock, halibut, angler fish and wolf fish.
You can now combine the fishing trip of a lifetime with an equally memorable winter adventure. Feel the magic as the blues-blue winter light envelopes the spectacular countryside at 67 degrees north. Stand face to face with the enormous forces of nature, while at the same time witnessing the shimmering northern lights. This is an area rich in tradition, going all the way back to the last Ice Age.
The northern lights can be seen on dark, clear evenings from September to April. In Bodø, beneath the Auroral Oval, a belt of light that centres around the geomagnetic poles, the odds are very good for seeing the colourful, flickering lights. They often start faintly in the far north, moving higher up in the evening and night sky.

Just outside the town centre lies Bodømarka with trails and paths that offer lasting experiences and peaceful inspiration. Enjoy the soft whistling sound of skis on the tracks – there are 30 kilometres of those in the area.
In the Bodø region there are a number of smaller ski centres: Vestvatn Alpinanlegg in Misvær, Sulitjelma Fjellandsby and Glomfjord Alpinsenter, offering a total of seven slopes. These resorts cater mostly for beginners, but at Glomfjord there will be challenges for more advanced skiers too. Ski rental is available at Vestvatn and Sulitjelma.
The Bodø region can offer great off-piste skiing, with Beiarn, south-east of Bodø, as one of the highlights (although relatively unknown). Always remember to consider the avalanche risk, have proper equipment and ski with someone who knows the area.
