7 Pleasures is the second instalment of The Red Pieces, a performance cycle about body, art and politics which begun with 69 Positions at Oktoberdans in 2014. Here, Ingvartsen placed her own naked body among the audience in an interactive art gallery, and confronted the 1960s and 70s political flirt with transgression and sexual utopias in performance art.
7 Pleasures is a choreographed orgy, a different, but decidedly alive presentation of the proximity of pleasure in experience and fantasy. In it, twelve dancers present different stages and states – seven forms of pleasure in long, sensuous movements. They search across each other's skin and bodies, turn bodies into objects and objects into bodies, show the transformation of the body and touch, test and cross each other's boundaries. Pleasure is turned upside down, inside out and shaken until in the end it appears undressed in all its glory. Vibrating, viscous, tactile, visual, contract-based, ecstatic and collective: seven intertwined circular movements and questions together draw up a map of the diversity and possibilities of pleasure.
“Mette Ingvartsen proves that the brain is the body's largest erogenous zone” – Morgenbladet
Our perception of pleasure is naturally influenced by how sexuality is presented in public. Ingvartsen challenges perceptions and attitudes in society by showing other forms of pleasure than those that surround us in everyday life. Pleasure partly has a sinister streak – something indescribable, taboo and unacceptable that is denied – and a highly social and transgressive potential in joy, almost ecstatic, something infectious, socialising and inclusive: two sides with great potential to disturb the clichés associated with nudity and sexuality.
