Fireworks in Grieg’s sitting room.
As the winner of the 2016 Edvard Grieg International Piano Competition, South Korean Ah Ruem Ahn is familiar to Bergen audiences. With her considerable audience appeal she also won the audience prize in the same competition.
Reviewers have described her interpretations as masterful and strong but also as charming and open. A meditative playing style with a warm, ingratiating tone is perfect for Griegs Poetic Tone Pictures, and she has the delicate touch needed for the virtuoso runs in Liszt’s demanding etude Ricordanza. In Schubert’s sombre C minor Sonata she uses her technical repertoire to the full to erect the monumental edifice that the sonata constitutes.
The recital concludes with fireworks: Rachmaninov’s arrangement of Kreisler’s Liebeslied is almost reason alone to attend the recital. It is a privilege merely to enter the Grieg family parlour, and Ahn is one of few pianists capable of making Grieg’s unique grand piano sing at its full potential.
Ahn is also the soloist in Grieg’s A minor Concerto with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
