ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO - Celebrating 40 Years + support BEHARIE

🙏 It is a great honor for Olavsfest to present Angélique Kidjo herself on stage in Borggården on Tuesday 30 July - with Norway's new soul comet Beharie as support!

💥 Angelique Kidjo is a living musical legend. In 2024, the world music pioneer from Benin celebrates 40 years as an artist, and is more vital than ever.

- Angélique Kidjo is an indisputable world star, and it is unique that she chooses to come to Olavsfest as part of her big anniversary tour. This is big for us, says Olavsfest director Steinar Larsen.

The extensive world tour started at the Royal Albert Hall in London in November. It will visit, among others, the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center in Washington - and Borggården in Trondheim - before ending in New York next autumn.

- I myself was lucky enough to be present at the tour opening in London, and got to see a firework display by an artist. Not least, it was fun to see the audience, who in both age and background showed a diversity that we also strive for in Olavsfest, says Larsen.

Time Magazine has called Angélique Kidjo "Africa's premier diva". Through her 16 albums, she has collected a total of five Grammy awards, no other African solo artist has more. As recently as 2023, she received the prestigious Polar Music Prize ("music's Nobel Prize"), thus ending up in the company of names such as Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Björk, Pink Floyd, Iggy Pop and Metallica.

The voice, radiance and energy Angelique Kidjo shows on stage is formidable. Musically, she can be called a true world music pioneer with her mix of traditional West African music, American R&B, funk and jazz, in addition to musical elements from both Europe and Latin America. All of her last 14 albums have been in the top 10 of the Billboard World Albums chart, three of them going all the way to the top. She boasts many hits, including "Agolo", Wombo Lombo", "Salala" and "Wé-Wé"

Kidjo moved from Benin to Paris as an adult. The plan was initially to become a human rights lawyer, before she ended up studying music. However, her commitment to human rights has not diminished. Angélique Kidjo has been involved in a number of charitable causes and has held several positions, especially in peace work and women's global rights. Among other things, she is an ambassador for both UNICEF and OXFAM. Since 2006 has run her own foundation, Batonga, which works for education among disadvantaged young girls in her home country of Benin.

- The theme for Olavsfest 2024 is POWER, and in Angéliqe KIdjo we have an artist who uses her great influence and power constructively and positively, says Larsen.

We are proud to present Norway's new soul star BEHARIE as support for Angélique Kidjo.
