A sampling of the height of 19th century music, with a twist on Thursday evening.
Mark Padmore’s heroic, yet sensitive tenor qualities were obviously in the forefront of prize-winning composer Thomas Larcher’s mind when he wrote A Padmore Cycle, one of many major works that have been expressly dedicated to the singer.
The opera Rienzi was written when Wagner was just 26 years old, and although popular in its day, was eclipsed by the composer’s subsequent innovations. The overture, however, remains a staple of the repertoire.
On Friday evening, we have the pleasure of introducing the dazzling young violin soloist Guro Kleven Hagen in a performance of the Mendelssohn concerto. She is the very first Norwegian violinist to be a prize-winner at the International Yehudi Menuhin Competition.
