BFK | 03.11.2024 | Coconut Head Generation (2023)

Insultingly called "coconut heads" by the older generations, the students of the University of Ibadan in south-western Nigeria are anything but stupid and passive as the term implies. They have formed a film club and meet every Thursday to watch the works of directors such as Med Hondo and Mahamet Saleh Haroun, and they use these films as a starting point for heated debates on a wide range of topics such as colonialism, corruption, intersectionality, and feminism. As the Thursday Film Series transforms from a film club into a political movement, we follow the young members from a small auditorium where they watch films, to the barricades in the streets.

Coconut Head Generation is an observational documentary filmed between 2019 and 2021. It explores the power that cinema and community have to initiate change, and the importance of spaces in which people can meet to discuss ideas and exchange perspectives. Directed by the Kinshasa-born filmmaker and programmer Alain Kassanda, the film won the Grand Prize at Cinéma du Réel in 2023.
