Next Sohee is July Jung's meditative and uncomfortable examination of the exploitation of young people in a late capitalist society. It follows So-hee (Kim Si-eun), a spirited high-schooler beginning a work placement at a call center, who ultimately has life crushed out of her. The film also features director Jung's frequent collaborator Bae Doona. Both lead actresses deliver poignant and sensitive portrayals of women on either side of the workplace, equally stuck in a rotten system. The story is based on news articles published in South Korea.
Next Sohee is a film in two halves: an intimate and harrowing look at the cruelty vulnerable youths can experience in the workplace, and a frantic and frustrating fight for unattainable justice. The lack of insight into the characters highlights how capitalism dehumanizes people to be no more than workers—with many thinking themselves blameless in the suffering of others. We're all just trying to survive, after all.
