BFK | 19.05.2024 | GRATISVISNING | Camp de Thiaroye (1988)

Camp de Thiaroye follows a group of Senegalese soldiers who fought for France during World War II. Having spent several years in German prison camps during the war, the Senegalese veterans are sent to the Thiaroye military camp to undergo transition to civilian life. They are entitled to a payment of 1.500 francs in demobilization benefits, but instead they are met with racist attitudes and broken promises from the French officers, eventually causing the tension to rise to a breaking point.

Camp de Thiaroye is an important anti-colonialist work which gives a strong critique of the French colonial system and was banned in France for a decade after its release, as well as censored in Senegal.
