The Spirit of the Beehive follows seven-year-old Ana, who lives in a small village in Spain in the early 1940s. After seeing Frankenstein (1931), she gets obsessed with Frankenstein's monster. She tries to find him after her sister tells her he's a real spirit, but finds a wounded soldier instead.

Erice's film is a haunting and atmospheric study of the inner life of a child living in a small, isolated village in Spain during the Franco regime.
