Søren Kierkegaard famously stated that "life can only be understood backwards". Rarely is this illustrated better than in Cynthia Scotts, The Company of Strangers. Eight women, seven senior and one young, are left stranded in a cabin after their bus breaks down. While waiting for help, they reflect on their lives together, both the good and the bad.
The film is heavily improvised, leading to meaningful conversations that leave a lasting impression on the viewer. These conversations, as well as old photographs, and the conscious way it has been edited, allows us to get to know these women: a cast consisting of a famous lesbian painter, a woman who escaped to Quebec during World War 2, and more.
