I Was a Teenage Serial Killer and Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore are undoubtedly recognized as the two most iconic films by "The Queen of Underground Cinema," Sarah Jacobson (1971-2004). Jacobson was responsible for directing, writing, and editing both films, where the 'DIY-attitude' is prominent.

Both main characters share a first name: Mary Jane's story is based on her own and other women's experiences of and approach to sexual liberation, whereas the Mary that is a serial killer is more extreme in her ways.

Mary (Kristin Calabrese) is "The Teenage Serial Killer," a nineteen-year-old who is fed up with the oppression of women. Her solution to this is to murder the men who suppress herself and other women.

With its low budget and black-and-while film, as well as a soundtrack consisting of riot grrrl-bands such as Heavens to Betsy, this is a clear nod to the feminist DIY-culture in the 90s. This was Sarah Jacobson's first film under her own company, Station Wagon Productions.

In Jacobson's only feature film the theme of "first times" is in focus. Mary Jane (Lisa Gerstein) navigates her first job, friendships, crushes—and her first time. Through conversations with her friends and colleagues at the cinema where she works, different approaches to sexuality and friendships are discussed. At the same time, Mary Jane tries to find her place in the world and to understand herself.

Considered as Jacobson's coming of age film, it delivers a more direct and honest perspective on topics such as sexual liberation and gender roles. Simultaneously, it's a time capsule from the 90's punk DIY-scene with its soundtrack and characters, where the culture around zines and punk music is at its core.
