From 18 January, Norwegian Opera & Ballet: Passion, rebellion and anger in a time of war
Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd will be performed in Norway for the very first time! This is an opera set in a hard masculine environment, about repressed passions and the weight of guilt - but also about rebellion, the power of beauty and about release.
A young man, Billy Budd, comes on board. He is happy, strong, industrious and strikingly handsome. Everyone - even the hardened Master-at-Arms Claggart - is drawn to him. The young man’s only imperfection is that he stammers when stressed, and this will have fatal consequences. Captain Vere is forced to do something which will haunt him for the rest of his life.
The Norwegian Opera & Ballet's director Annilese Miskimmon directs this masterpiece, which features an exclusively male cast.
Music: Benjamin Britten
Libretto: Edward Morgan Forster og Eric Crozier, basert på Herman Melvilles roman
Musical direction: Mark Wigglesworth
Direction: Annilese Miskimmon
Performed in English, with English and Norwegian subtitles.
