Experience music by female composers from the stage in the Great Hall - up close and personal.

Women have always composed music, but for centuries they have faced resistance when it comes to having their works performed in public. For far too long, both performers and audiences have been deprived of the joy of playing and hearing music written by women. This silence has robbed us of half the genius, half the history – and not least half the joy of our musical heritage!

To mark March as the month of International Women's Day – and to round off a series of TSO concerts with orchestral works by female composers, both historical and innovative – musicians from the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the Trondheim Vocal Ensemble invite you to a chamber music concert dedicated exclusively to music written by women. We welcome you to sit with us on the main stage in Olavshallen for a unique, up close and personal live listening experience!

In this special chamber concert, we breathe new life into works by ten historical composers and blend them with the music of five contemporary composers. We take you on a musical journey from the early 18th century to the present day, featuring composers from ten different nations.

We begin with a fanfare by one of America’s most performed living composers – a celebration of the progress made towards gender equality. Then our journey begins with the enigmatic Mrs. Philharmonica, a mysterious woman who hid her identity and published her manuscripts in the shadow of St. Paul’s Cathedral in 18th century London. From there, we move through 19th century Europe, on to modern-day Australia, and cross the Atlantic to hear the unofficial theme song of the American film industry in the 1930s.

The program includes music for solo instruments, trios, quartets, wind ensembles, children’s choirs and more – and you’ll even have the opportunity to join in the music making!
