11–14 March, Norwegian Opera & Ballet: Contemporary dance from a favela of Rio
Nordic and Brazilian dramatic art come together when the prominent choreographer Lia Rodrigues welcomes the dancers of Carte Blanche to the Maré favela, one of the largest slums in Rio.
In her hometown of Rio de Janeiro, the award-winning dance artist Lia Rodrigues has plenty on her plate. She has created her own international company, Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças, started the dance festival Panorama and is the founder of Centro de Artes da Maré, a centre for art and culture in the favela.
Nororoca is based on Rodrigues’ performance Pororoca from 2009. The word ‘pororoca’ originates from the Tupian language. ‘Poro’rog’ is a roaring tidal bore phenomenon that occurs when saltwater and freshwater meet in the mouth of the Amazon River. In this new performance, Brazilian and Nordic dance aesthetics converge.
