Chiharu Shiota - Direction

Overview

Experience the installation "Direction" by the Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota at KODE.

Chiharu Shiota is internationally renowned for her intricate and spectacular thread constructions that fills entire rooms, using a technique that has been compared with «drawing in the air».

In Bergen her new installation "Direction" fills the new Stenersen Room at KODE 2 with hundreds of kilometres of red thread. The public is invited to enter the work for an ambient experience. The visual impression is both fragile and massive, and the body's response upon entering is an important part of the artist's objective. Her installation is accompanied by selected drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography and film.

Shiota often combines the rich symbolism of the thread with old objects that embody personal stories. At KODE the artist has incorporated old boats from Western Norway in her work. These boats were once an everyday means of transportation along the coast outside of Bergen.

At the same time Shiota touches upon navigating in a broader perspective: «I've been concentrating on the distance that we cover in our lives, the journey we take that has an unclear destination», says the artist.

Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972) was educated in Japan and Germany, and has exhibited in museums around the world, such as MoMA PS1, New York (2003), La Maison Rouge, Paris (2011) and Kunstsammlung Nordrheinwestfalen, K21, Düsseldorf (2015). In Germany she studied under Marina Abramović and Rebecca Horn, among others. Shiota has lived and worked in Berlin since 1996.
