Conversations with Land

Overview

With the exhibition 'Conversations with Land' shown at Lydgalleriet, Norwegian artist Alexander Rishaug takes the sound of Midtfjellet Vindpark as his starting point. He investigates how the sounds from the wind farm transform and alter our experience of nature and landscape.

The Midtfjellet Vindpark is located in Fitjar, Stord, about 65 km from Bergen, and consists of 55 wind turbines. In March 2023, Rishaug, Arne Skaug Olsen, and Anna Näumann went on a survey to the Midtfjellet Wind Farm. The aim of the fieldwork was to investigate, map, and record the sounds of the landscape. The sound from the wind farm is the starting point for a multi-channel sound installation that invites the audience to listen actively. By moving around in the gallery space, one will perceive a subtle vibration and deep sonic activity that forms organic imprints, something that can be experienced as a 'shifting baseline', a miniature landscape in slow and almost invisible change. The space is lit by lighting designer Birk Nygaard.

'Conversations with Land' is part of an ongoing art project that explores the sound of the Norwegian landscape in a historical perspective, sound ecology, landscape exploitation, and geopolitical processes. Through listening as a method, Rishaug wants to engage in a dialogue with and investigate the psychogeological and psychoacoustic phenomena associated with specific places.

Produced in collaboration with Birk Nygaard, Arne Skaug Olsen, Anna Näumann and Lydgalleriet. Curated by Julie Lillelien Porter. 'Conversations with Land' is supported by Billedkunstnernes Vederlagsfond, Arts Council Norway and KORO.
