Deaf Culture Days 2025 in Trondheim – 200 Years of Norwegian Sign Language

The event offers sign language interpreters and speech-to-text interpreting.

The festival takes place from September 19–21 at Clarion Hotel Trondheim.
The weekend offers a rich program with exciting activities for children, youth, families, and adults.

The event kicks off on Friday with a professional seminar in collaboration with NTNU. The theme of the seminar is:
“Norwegian Sign Language – Yesterday, Today, but What About Tomorrow?”,
featuring contributions from several speakers.

During the festival, you can experience lectures, historical city walks, and theatre performances – including a production from Teater Manu, who will perform “I Am the Wind” by Jon Fosse at Trøndelag Teater.
Teater Manu will also host various cultural activities for children and young people.
In addition, Jotunheimen E-sport will provide an exciting meeting place for younger participants.

Saturday evening concludes with a gala dinner in the banquet hall at Clarion Hotel Trondheim.

About Deaf Culture Days:

Deaf Culture Days, first held in 1967, is an important festival that brings together deaf people and sign language users from across the country, offering a rich cultural program – including theatre, lectures, and film screenings.
There are also specially designed activities and offerings for children and young people.

In this anniversary year, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Norway’s first school for the deaf, founded in 1825 in Trondheim by Andreas Christian Møller – who was deaf himself.
At this first school, Norwegian Sign Language was developed and established as a distinct language.
Today, Norwegian Sign Language is recognized as an official language, on par with spoken Norwegian, according to the Language Act.
