DokuBergen // Im Keller (2014)

Im Keller (2014) Director: Ulrich Seidl, 81 min
(film will be screened with english subtitles)

Ever since it became known in 2008 that Josef Fritzl had kept his daughter and three of their seven children locked in a soundproof basement for several decades, the world has been asking itself what exactly goes on in Austrian basements. In the documentary IM KELLER, the country's national provocateur Ulrich Seidl has taken on the task of providing an answer, and although he doesn't uncover anything comparable to Fritzl's atrocities, he gives us an insight into the Austrian national soul that is as entertaining as it is bizarre.
Where Seidl's feature films are permeated by a pitch-black humor that at times borders on the sadistic and misanthropic, IM KELLER is both very, very strange and at times directly heartwarming. Like Werner Herzog, Seidl has a talent for finding eccentric people who seemingly have no idea how to behave in front of a camera, and rather than moralizing or mocking, he simply lets them present themselves and their basements to the audience.

The result is one of the strangest and most subtle documentary films of all time.
