DR BEKKEN TRIO

Pianist Tor Einar Bekken has been a fixture in the Norwegian blues and jazz scene since the late 1980s. He has released over fifty recordings under his own name, participated in Spellemann-winning releases with other artists, been nominated for Spellemann himself, received the Notodden Blues Festival's honorary prize, played at every major festival in Norway, toured Europe with New Orleans legends such as Marva Wright, Benny Turner and Eddie Bo, jammed on stage with Allen Toussaint, and performed at the Royal Albert Hall. He is also an associate professor of music at NTNU, and is constantly working to familiarize himself with all kinds of musical genres.

The trio includes drummer Dag E Kittilsen, who has been a steady rhythmic partner for over thirty years. Kittilsen has a long and diverse career behind him, with great variation in expression. Last but not least, we find bassist Erlend Smalås, who has done everything from theater music, children's music and jazz to TV appearances and studio work. Smalås has won Spellemann with Rasmus and Verdens Beste Band and has been a regular in the orchestra pit at Trøndelag Teater. He is an exuberant, responsive and improvising bassist of the highest rank.

When this trio kicks off, the music will appeal to both heart and brain - and perhaps the rest of the body right away. It is spontaneous music with clear roots in various forms of jazz, blues and improv - always new, unpredictable and disturbingly funky.
