Dvorak & Brahms
– among beautiful melodies and trembling happiness
Conductor: Alvin Ho
Soloist, violin: Yukari Ohno
Program
Florence Price: NORWEGIAN PREMIERE: Andante Moderato for string orchestra
Johannes Brahms: Violin Concerto, Op. 77
Antonìn Dvořák: Symphony No. 8, Op. 88
Two prizewinners are back! Conductor Alvin Ho (Hong Kong/Great Britain) won the Princess Astrid International Music Prize in 2022, while violinist Yukari Ohno (Japan) won the Princess Astrid International Music Prize in 2021.
Ohno is back to thrill us with Brahms’ lyrical Violin Concerto. A concert that literally overflows with beautiful melodic themes closely intertwined with restless, emotional moods, full of magical moments and technical finesse.
Dvořák's most Czech symphony, "Symphony No. 8", is a life-affirming celebration of life, and the joy of being able to enjoy nature with its varying landscapes, sounds and voices, and its inexorable round dance with the seasons.
The concert opens with Florence Price's heartfelt "Andante moderato" from her String Quartet in G major, a piece that is both inspired by Dvořák and other late Romantic composers, in addition to having clear features from the African-American spirituals tradition.
