Ellen Ugelvik
Lyrical time travel.
During his lifetime, Edvard Grieg’s living room was constantly filled with newly composed music. Pianist Ellen Ugelvik from Bergen has dedicated her career to innovation in collaboration with composers and artists, and in this concert, tradition and renewal stand side by side.
In the villa at Troldhaugen, the pianist performs a selection of Grieg’s Lyric Pieces alongside re-composed versions of the same Grieg pieces by Christian Blom, as well as works by Bente Leiknes Thorsen and Magne Hegdal.
"Ugelvik builds delicate, fragile sound structures from the fragmented Grieg material, she interprets and articulates the complex pieces, lifting them, making them breathe, and resonate – not as random constructions, but as music, as ‘lyric pieces’.” – BERGENS TIDENDE
Ugelvik has premiered numerous works as a soloist and with ensembles. She is also featured at this year’s Festival together with composer and double bassist Inga Margrete Aas on Sunday 25 May.
