Embroidery workshop in solidarity with Palestine - "Tatreez and Tea"

Get tickets here

The event is free, but it is necessary to purchase tickets.
There will be an opportunity to vipps NORWAC. The International Women's League for Peace and Freedom (IKFF) in Trondheim, Midtbyen Husflidslag and the Palestinagruppa at Svartlamon are inviting.

Tatreez is the name for Palestinian traditional embroidery that has deep roots in Palestinian culture and history. It is used on Palestinian folk costumes and decorative textiles. Each area in Palestine has its own patterns. As a result of occupation, displacement and oppression of Palestinians, Tatreez has become an important symbol of Palestinian identity, belonging and protest both in Palestine and among Palestinians worldwide. Palestinian embroidery is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.

The event consists of two parts. One part is two lectures on Palestinian embroidery and its significance for identity, belonging and resistance. The second part is an embroidery workshop where there will be a practical introduction to cross stitch embroidery (tatreez fallahi). No prior knowledge is necessary!

Participants can choose between several motifs and the motif can be used to make a button.

We also invite you to embroider collectively, on a piece of cloth, which could perhaps become a banner, etc.

Tea with sage, cookies and other snacks with a Palestinian twist will be served. Palestinian music will be played in the background.

The event functions as a meeting place to get to know new people and to learn more about Palestine. The target group is adults and young people, but many bring smaller children. Sheets with Palestinian motifs are laid out for the children to color.

The event concept has previously been carried out, among other things, five times in Oslo, at Steinkjer Library, in Sarpsborg, in Larvik and in Lillehammer.

A little about those offering the concept: Samiha Nejmi, Palestinian and raised in Lebanon. She has worked as a tatreez teacher in Beit Atfal Assomoud in Lebanon, in a humanitarian organization that works to improve the living conditions for Palestinians in Lebanon. Kristin Sunde, landscape architect and lived in Bethlehem in the fall of 2018. She worked voluntarily for the Palestine Museum for Natural History and there she learned tatreez. Leila Restan is Norwegian and Palestinian. She is a social scientist and is interested in Palestinian history and culture. She works with the Instagram account @mittpalestina. And, Gada Azam is a political scientist and activist. She is a tatreez enthusiast and collects Palestinian folk costumes. She also works with the Instagram account @mittpalestina.

The name "Tatreez and tea" is inspired by the Instagram account tatreezandtea, which is run by American-Palestinian Wafa Ghnaim
