EXHIBITION: Magne Myrmo - Last World Champion in Wooden Skiing

One of the most dramatic moments in the history of the World Ski Championships took place during the World Championships in Falun on February 19, 1974, when Magne Myrmo won gold in the 15 km cross-country race. On wooden skis from the Landsem ski factory, he won the race ahead of the rest of the cross-country elite who had chosen fiberglass skis. With that, Magne Myrmo wrote his name into skiing history by becoming the world's last world champion on wooden skis. Later in 1974, Myrmo also won the 5-mile race in Holmenkollen on the same Landsem skis, becoming the last person to win an international victory on wooden skis. After the season, Magne Myrmo signed the 1974 winning pair with a greeting and thank you for the good skis and sent them to Even Landsem at the Landsem ski factory, as several Norwegian champions did, and they became part of Landsem's winning ski collection.

Myrmo's legendary winning skis from the 1974 season, as well as the World Cup medals from Falun and the silver medal from the 1972 Sapporo Olympics, the collection of Holmenkoll trophies and other prizes, as well as much, much more, can be seen in the Rindal Ski Museum's exhibition "Magne Myrmo - Last World Champion in Wooden Skiing". This temporary exhibition opened in 2024 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the World Cup in Falun. Here we show a selection of about 200 objects from the extensive Magne Myrmo collection that we received as a gift from the Mona and Magne Myrmo family in the anniversary year. The collection consists of his complete prize collection, skis, ski clothing, training diaries, result lists, lubrication cases, photos, films and a completely unique archive material.

Together, the objects in the exhibition provide a good insight into Magne Myrmo's long and impressive career as a skier, lubricant, coach and employee at the Landsem ski factory. In addition, the extensive archive material that Magne Myrmo has collected and systematized over many years provides a good insight into an important period in ski history, with the transition from wooden skis to fiberglass skis.

In addition to the Myrmo exhibition, every day during the World Ski Championships you can visit the exhibition of Sigurd Røen's prize collection, as well as the permanent exhibitions at Rindal Ski Museum, where many world champions and Olympic champions are represented with prizes, winning skis and objects.
