Folk & Rackare was one of the most influential groups in Scandinavian folk music in the 70s and 80s. The cooperation between Carin Kjellman and Ulf Gruvberg led to the release of Med rötter i medeltiden in 1974, just before they founded the quartet Folk och Rackare together with Jørn Jensen and Trond Villa of the Norwegian cult-band Folque. The two Norwegians brought their characteristic drone sound with them into the group, and together they found their unique sound inspired by British folk-bands like Fairport Convention and Pentangle.
With innovative and original arrangements they reached a wide audience, both within Sweden and worldwide, and they became a role model for many folk music groups and ballad singers for generations to come. In April of this year, the Swedish music magazine Lira listed “Rackarspel” as the fifth most important folk album in Sweden.
