Norway's own free jazz pioneer turns 70.
There aren't a lot of people who deserve the label "true pioneer", but Frode Gjerstad is one of them. It is due to his energetic and curious nature that free jazz has such a strong position in Oslo today. When he started to look into free jazz from his hometown of Stavanger in the 70s there were few people who could match him in Norway, and he looked to Europe and the US to expand and develop his artistic visions, and brought new musical impulses back home.
Frode Gjerstad has been the mentor of many young improvisation talents through the years. In 1985 she started Circulasione Totale Orchestra, a band with a changing crew of young musicians, mainly from Stavanger. Amog Gjerstad's international collaborators, we can mention Peter Brötzman, Evan Parker and Hamid Drake.
Programme for Gjerstad's 70th celebration:
Thomas Strønen & Extended Ground with Frode Gjerstad
Ståle Liavik Solberg / Sten Sandell / Nick Stephens / Frode Gjerstad
Frode Gjerstad Trio with Steve Swell
