Grieg & Gubaidulina with Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester, Gidon Kremer & Ah Ruem Ahn

Overview

Signature works by Gubaidulina and Grieg: Offertorium and the A minor Concerto.
When Offertorium was premiered in Vienna in 1981, Sofia Gubaidulina was practically unknown in the west. The score had been smuggled out from Moscow for this evening's soloist, Gidon Kremer, who had recently defected from the Soviet Union. The work immediately placed Gubaidulina amongst the elite of contemporary composers and opened up for a remarkable career with commissions from performers worldwide.
Offertorium is based on the regal theme in Bach's Musical Offering BWV 1079. Through a series of variations notes disappear gradually from the theme until it is then reconstructed in retrograde. The work is a meditation on the need to sacrifice and give in order to create something new, and for Gubaidulina it also symbolises death and resurrection in a religious context.
Ah Ruem Ahn from South Korea won the 2016 Edvard Grieg International Piano Competition. She also won the audience prize and is the 2018 soloist in the Bergen International Festival's signature work, Grieg's A minor Piano Concerto, with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under its Chief Conductor Edward Gardner.
