Trumpet and percussion virtuosos.
There is not much established repertoire for the combination of percussion and trumpet. However, that is no problem for Håkan Hardenberger and Colin Currie. Several of the works in this unique programme were composed especially for this outstanding duo, including Brett Dean’s … the scene of the crime … from 2017 and Rolf Wallin’s Realismos Màgicos from 2014, both co-commissioned by the Bergen International Festival.
Both artists are great ambassadors for their instruments. The Times referred to Swedish trumpeter Hardenberger as ‘the best trumpet player in the galaxy’, and The Spectator called Scottish percussionist Currie ‘the world’s finest and most daring percussionist’.
Together the refreshingly unconventional combo appears in a concert somewhat out of the ordinary in concept and execution. Hardenberger and Currie’s chemistry sets off sparks and makes their audience forget that the music is new and unfamiliar, getting them just to listen instead. A reviewer in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung experienced that ‘Yes, new music can actually be so exciting and so relaxing at the same time.’
