“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
The most famous movement from Handel’s most famous work carries the message of the Book of Revelation with resounding choral voices. The work, which was written in 1741, has been performed countless times around the world, in many different versions and arrangements. When soloists, choir and orchestra from the NTNU Department of Music, under the direction of Ragnar Rasmussen, now tackle this great work and present our version, it is not without awe.
Few works, if any, have contributed more strongly to making Handel world-renowned as a composer than the oratorio Messiah. For many, the oratorio is closely linked to Christmas, but the entire work of 54 movements is also about Easter and the resurrection. There are three main parts: the birth of Jesus, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and eternal life.
The oratorio has been a huge success right from the start. After the premiere in the Dublin theatre in April 1742, one of the newspapers wrote that this musical work must be said to be “The finest Composition of Music that was ever heard.”
The choir consists of students and staff, singers and instrumentalists, from the performing and musicological fields of study, and shows the breadth of our wonderful student and professional community.
Come and experience magnificent music in the autumn darkness!
